In this week’s studio notes, I share one of my favorite methods for creating patterns. I like using the diamond repeat pattern type for my designs. It helps hide the repeat and shows beautifully in more complex designs. It also creates a faux half-drop repeat style. I love using my hand-painted designs to create my surface design patterns. While I sometimes fully vectorize the art for some of my patterns, I love the raster textural, hand-painted feel of my designs. I scan the art at a very high resolution so that I can create a large design for multiple applications.
In this video, I demonstrate how to clean up artwork, create a diamond repeat template in Affinity Designer, and ultimately, how to create the full pattern repeat.
I hope you enjoy watching a bit of behind the scenes process on how I create my patterns and learn a few techniques and tips to use in your process.
